What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a small family bakery. Our customers would be those who typically like to have holiday cakes any time of the year and customers, like ourselves, who like to take risks. We offer traditional items, but we take risks in trying out unique flavors, such as watermelon cupcake, vanilla bean cake, butterfinger cookies. Sweet potatoes cupcake baked with pecans and topped with marshmallow buttercream.
Tell us about yourself
Like so many out there, I suffer from depression. I discovered I had talent when I was in an intensive outpatient program. Baking was so relaxing and fun. It also allows you to be creative and adventurous. My business is the extreme of part-time. We are open Sat-Sun 2 to 6 pm. We also take custom orders at any time.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've grown on the decoration side. I started out saying, "I'm not the best decorator, but the flavors and texture of my cakes are AMAZING!!!" The visuals only last a second, but that 1st bite will linger to the point of addiction.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Exposure. We have tried many ways to attract customers, but our location is not ideal, but yet ideal. Having access to the foot traffic at a mall is great, but it depends on your location.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Read up on all the necessary documents and licenses/certifications that may be required.
- Be prepared to develop your website company social media pages. Advertising that's free is a gift from God! 😉
- Be creative and feed your passion. It will feel like your company will not survive, especially during a pandemic. It's that passion that gives you a nudge. Creativity attracts many since most people are visual creatures.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
We bake all of our cakes, cupcakes, and cookies from scratch, including our icings [cream cheese, buttercream, and whipped cream]. The staff consists of me, my 18 yr old daughter, and my 11 yr old daughter. It's truly a family business!
