What's your business, and who are your customers?
I create one-of-a-kind, handmade jewelry using mostly semi-precious gemstones, found objects, and fossils set in Sterling Silver. I also teach small studio classes in metalsmithing and jewelry making. My customers come from a variety of age groups and income brackets. The common denominator is that they prefer jewelry that is unique and artistic over more traditional styles.
Tell us about yourself
I was first drawn to jewelry made by beads when I learned about all the wonderful things that have been made throughout history and around the world. Beads led to metalsmithing, which has kept me entranced for almost 30 years. That's saying a lot for an ADHD brain like mine.
Working with silver is always fascinating and challenging. It lends itself to many different working techniques….and then there are the thousands of jewelry styles that have already been created, with far more yet to be seen. Friends and family are impressed with my newfound ability to focus, but the truth is that with jewelry making and metalsmithing, I don't have to focus at all.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating my work has occasional challenges but teaching others to fabricate metal jewelry was a daunting challenge for me. Because I found early on that the rewards of sharing a fascinating and engrossing skill were great, I'm still facing the challenges and enjoying them after 20 years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, it's the business aspects, keeping track of things, record keeping. The creative side of my brain seems to have completely taken over.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Choose a business that you are really passionate about.
- Be persistent.
- Be flexible.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Even with all the challenges of self-employment, it's one of the best choices I have ever made.
