Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katya Mosely, Founder of Spirit Gate Wellness, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Spirit Gate Wellness is a Traditional Chinese Medicine practice that offers women an opportunity to optimize their physical and spiritual health. Most of our patients are women interested in cultivating their Qi, optimizing their hormones, and calming their spirits. Whether they are trying to conceive, process and move through loss, eliminate toxic stress, or identify the cause of an unexplained sickness, we guide each patient along their own customized path to well-being from the inside out.

Tell us about yourself

I became interested in acupuncture when I had debilitating lower back pain in my mid-20's. Chinese medicine and the intimate relationship I developed with my acupuncturist offered the first medical experience that was anything more than clinical to me. From there, I decided to enroll in a four-year program to earn my Master's in Traditional Chinese Medicine. My work in a gynecology hospital in Chengdu, China, confirmed that I wanted to focus on women's health, and in 2010 I opened my private practice concentrating on women's wellness. After of few years of personal fertility and motherhood challenges, my practice organically shifted to centering around the unique journeys of those trying to conceive, enjoy healthy pregnancies, and re-align postpartum.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is getting to participate in helping families achieve their dream of having children. I'm lucky that I get to experience this over and over again with each successful pregnancy Spirit Gate has helped to support.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is definitely staying on top of the admin. I am very passionate about my intimate work with patients, so the back end of the business (bookkeeping, record keeping, insurance billing, etc.) is far less interesting or rewarding for me.

What top tips would you give anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are passionate about your business.
  2. Choose a field or industry that genuinely interests you and encourages your personal growth.
  3. Build a network of referrals that can support your patients or customers in ways that are outside of your expertise.
