Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in martial arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tim Flynn, Founder of Kato Karate, located in Burbank, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kato Karate Online teaches Life Skills disguised as Martial Arts training. We work with kids ages 5-12yrs old.

Our Program is perfect for Home school kids who cannot handle large group settings and parents looking for a convenient and affordable option for their kids to get in 30mins of activity. Classes are held Monday - Thursday at 11 am PST for 30mins. Each week we will focus on a certain Life Skill and give an example of what it looks like using Martial Arts. Each month we will have a Celebrity Guest joining us Live to talk to kids about what it took them to succeed and get to where they are today. Kato Karate Online has support from Eric the Trainer, Celebrity Fitness Trainer, and TV Show Host out of Burbank, CA!

Tell us about yourself

I started Kato Karate in September of 2016. We are doing our Kato Karate Online Red Carpet Press Launch on August 31st at the Martial Arts History Museum in Burbank, CA. Attendees will get the chance to meet celebrities from TV, Film, and Martial Arts.

What motivates me every day is knowing that I am constantly changing a kid's life through Martial Arts. I love seeing them grow their confidence level and become a better version of themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My Biggest Accomplishment is getting reviews from Parents on how wonderful Kato Karate has been in their child's life. We are currently the Top Rated School on Google in our home location, Mankato, MN.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about running a business is marketing. So much is out there, and it's easy to get lost in the mix. I try to keep my Social Media as updated as possible and set myself apart from businesses like mine.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Talk to someone already running a business you want to run yourself. Learn as much as you can from them.
  2. Start small. Don't go huge right away. Keep your overhead low, so you can start profiting from your business.
  3. Stay positive on Social Media. Don't get involved with politics or anything like that. You may have a strong opinion, but you want people to like YOU for YOU, not for your political views.
