Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katie Berlinguette, owner of Pupper Palace, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Pupper Palace is a store just for dogs. We sell a wide range of dog food, treats, toys and have a charming self-serve pet wash station complete with everything you could possibly need to groom your own pup. We also provide pet grooming services. Our customers are the kind of people who deeply love their dogs and want the finer things in life for them. They truly treat their puppy-like royalty.

Tell us about yourself

My golden retriever, Winnie, got me into the dog business. She came into my life as a rescue unexpectedly two years ago. I quickly realized that there were no dog stores or self-serve pet washes in my neighborhood. Furthermore, the independent pet stores in Vancouver tend to have big opinions about specific products or brands. I feel strongly that people should make the choices they feel are best for their pet, their life, and their budget without judgment because there really isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to pet care and health. Winnie comes to work with me every day. She really motivates me to work hard because Pupper Palace is important for both of our futures. Winnie also helps me not take everything too seriously. She ensures that I don't overstep on our work-life balance because we still need time for daily walks & play.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting from scratch, renovating the space on my own, opening & operating Pupper Palace completely on my own without any outside help. Next month I'll be celebrating my first year in business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being patient & playing the long game, it takes time to see the results after some business decisions. Also, from the get-go, I prioritized work-life balance, which is hard sometimes, but it's essential for my mental health.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Budget more money and more time than you think. Trust your gut and get a second quote or opinion when something seems fishy. Make sure your expectations are in line with what is realistic and achievable.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Owning & operating a small business is hard. But dog people are happy people, and I couldn't be happier about my decision to open Pupper palace.
