Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kathleen Bulger, founder of Kathleen Bulger Holistic Nutritional Consulting, located in Brooklyn, NS, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am here to create a big shift.
I would even say a movement to allow women to become “Self-ish.”
Self-ish broken down is actually “ish” (relating to, or being) more like your “self.” I work with women who have been socially and culturally conditioned to leave their self-care until everyone else’s needs are met. This isn’t just an old cliché of the mother who is a homemaker looking after everything. It has translated into a new, even more, detrimental definition. Women with families, homes and high-pressured careers or entrepreneurs do it all. This is how we have become conditioned to “earn” our way.
Well, women, you have earned it! Time is time for you to take great pride in doing what you need to do for yourself, physically, mentally, and emotionally. That's where I come in. I help women explore their physical, mental, and emotional health through nutrition, connection to themselves, and creativity through one on one and group programs. Together we raise our awareness and our physical health, raising the vibration of women everywhere.
Tell us about yourself
I am Kathleen, a Registered Holistic Nutritional Consultant, mother, grandmother, wife, and proud hobby farm owner. Like many people in my industry, I was motivated to study Holistic Nutrition and Energy Medicine after a health crisis. I was in a major riding accident and had several surgeries. I had a stroke and a heart attack in the years following that.
I began studying and releasing the limitations allopathic medicine was imposing on me. I started to recover in a way everyone was shocked by. That’s when I decided no one should have to go through what I went through, believing they are without options and struggling to recover. I became consumed by learning more and finding answers.
I am motivated to work every day, and I love what I do because I never want anyone to feel like they are without options in their health and recover from traumatic medical events or even everyday stressors that can lead to them….this one I am an expert on.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is recognizing the importance of the continued evolution of the business and the world in which it exists. I have helped plant the seeds of hope for many people and gave them the tools to germinate the seeds through nutrition, connecting them back to their true selves, and exploring their creativity. I continue to evolve with my business and the people I serve. I think we all need to recognize the importance of this aspect of being in business.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I believe the hardest thing about being a business owner is doing the tasks that you are not as passionate about but that are always necessary. I love to teach, educate and research information, and I love to learn. The more I know, the more I realize I don't know, which excites me. I do not enjoy tracking things like social media posts or learning the tech side, all things to keep them running seamlessly. It's hard to find someone who truly understands your vision and vibe to represent your brand.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The top 3 tips I would give anyone starting a business today:
- Don’t believe everyone who tells you they are an expert in their field and they know how to help you; you are the expert in your field. Do not let them derail you and your passion.
- Show up as your authentic self, and take self-care seriously. There are people out there who will relate to no one else except you because of that alone.
- Find a core group of people who can embrace and support your vision and do the same for them, they are your most valuable resource. Surround yourself with courageous people with open hearts.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Final thoughts. If you don’t start something because you are afraid to fail, you will probably miss out on some of the most amazing experiences, relationships, and opportunities of your life. Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t be afraid to take a chance. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Don’t be afraid to ask even the most seemingly out-of-reach person to engage with you…. you just never know what might happen! I don’t believe there are any successful people out there who were not willing to fail. Eventually, you will succeed. Just be willing to evolve your thoughts and ideas and take a chance.
