Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katherine McClure, Owner of Katherine McClure Photography, located in Prairie City, IA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Katherine McClure Photography began as the passion of a young artist who loved her camera. It has grown into a boutique portrait studio creating museum-quality painted portraits and photographic art pieces! We provide a beautiful way to honor your professional achievements, the family you cherish, or the high school senior you are launching into the world with portrait art that celebrates!
Tell us about yourself
Every piece of this business was built around one thing - I think all people are beautiful! And there is no greater joy for me than showing that beauty to a client who couldn’t see it in themselves. As the mother to five curious kids, we say, ‘Learning is a lifelong endeavor’ in our house. I’ve spent 20 years continuing to educate myself in my craft, business, and personal life. That motto motivates me to bring everything I’ve learned to each client and create portraits that will be cherished for generations.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been in transitioning the business from ‘my business’ to ‘our family business.’ We now have two children on staff, one client-facing and one behind the scenes. We also have a professional hair and makeup artist on every session and installation service for homes and offices. I have lots of letters after my name, but using those personal achievements to change our family tree is my greatest business achievement.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest parts of being a business owner is isolation. Especially for entrepreneurs, who pour so much of themselves into their work, it can be difficult to find support. I am thankful for the organizations and opportunities that have helped me create a unique support system, even from my rural location.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
For anyone starting, running, or growing a business today, I would encourage you to get connected!
- Find a connection in your industry. Professional Photographers of America provided a continuing education framework that not only elevated my artwork but my connections with other inspiring artists.
- Look for connections in your community. I’m an alumnus of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program and the Community Leadership Program by LeadDSM, a member of NAWBO Iowa, and a past president of Executive Women International – Des Moines. Each of these experiences has resulted in valuable relationships across varied industries.
- Teat every connection like a VIP – you never know which relationship might change your life!
