Your Guide to Infiniverse - Katharina Vittenlind
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katharina Vittenlind, Founder of Infinimaps and PostReality Media, located in Lund, Sweden.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is called Infinimaps and provides maps to help users of the Oculus app Multiverse/Infiniverse to navigate the VR world.
Tell us about yourself
I stumbled upon the newly released pre-beta app Multiverse/Infiniverse while exploring virtual reality in my Oculus about a year ago. I quickly realized that navigation was a major issue in an open VR world. The first maps I made were based on the rudimentary maps provided by the developer team, but as demand for more information quickly increased, I went on to create informative maps of my own called Infinimaps, adding to them all the information the users asked for.
In the beginning, it was more of a hobby and a free service to the community that I was a part of, but as time went on, I expanded to provide news, event calendars, and yellow pages, and at that point, I started a Patreon through which customers got access to my material. I now run the company PostReality Media, which on top of Infinimaps, offers businesses assistance and promotion when establishing themselves in VR.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Finding and identifying the needs of a quickly growing community – information, news, maps, directories – was crucial to develop my business. It helped users, and the Infiniverse grow, evolve, and quickly rise to the next level.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It took a lot of time and work to get to a point where I could start charging for my services. Building a brand and making a name for myself in the community was necessary. In the meantime, you have to pay the bills by other means – so a lot of double work.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find your niche and identify the unfulfilled needs.
- Networking can be hard if you work online. Put some time into finding people working in the same field to share experiences, help each other out and get new input, so you don't get stuck in a bubble.
- Get to know your customers, talk to them and help them out. It pays off in the long run.
