Nutrition + Mindful Eating - Kath Eats
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kath Younger, Founder of Kath Eats, located in Charlottesville, VA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I've been blogging at katheats.com for over 15 years now! What started as a personal food journal has turned into a website home base for a variety of different side gigs, plus the place where I continue to share snippets of my life, from parenting to home organization to real food and recipes!
Tell us about yourself
I started my career in publishing and public relations and worked in an office from 8:30 to 5:30. I HATED IT! I knew I needed to find a job that allowed me flexibility and time creativity. I went back to school to become a Registered Dietitian and started my blog as a hobby and creative outlet. While I was in school, it produced part-time income and grew to my full-time job upon graduation. I've been writing consistently online for almost half my life! What I love most about my career is there are so many pivots I can take when I feel stuck. I've diversified my income with courses, affiliate marketing, brand partnerships, and email marketing. I love waking up to be creative each day!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I had some of my oatmeal recipes published in O Magazine, and that was a big moment for me (and oatmeal, haha). My goal has never been to be THE most famous or reach everyone but to create a community of health-minded women to share ideas and experiences. Some of my followers have been reading my blog for over a decade, and while I have never met many of them, I consider them all my friends.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The best and worst part of entrepreneurship is that you are never really unplugged. This is great because I can work anywhere or anytime and don't need to report to a boss or an office, but it's also hard to disconnect and turn off the to-do list in my brain. I have way more ideas than I do time.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Build something online so that you can have location freedom. I love the ability to work from anywhere. Figure out your strengths in business and create around those. Diversify your income streams so you can roll with the ebbs and flows of each stream. There are seasons of success for each of mine, and when one is struggling, I focus on one that is thriving. It makes me feel like there is always something growing.
