What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a trusted, leading commercial, lifestyle, portrait, and editorial photographer in Los Angeles and have been working for over 14 years in the field. I've worked with a plethora of brands, such as Knix, Dahu Ski, Capranea, Yniq, Peroni, Rumhaven, M. Gemi, and Microkickboards. I have photographed high-profile clients such as President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Kate Hudson, Taja V Simpson, America Fererra, Dian Von Furstenburg, Chris Sullivan, AJ Buckley, Lucy Hale, and Julie Benz, among others. I've also had work featured in Forbes, People Magazine, and Entertainment Tonight. And I regularly work with everyday people and entrepreneurs to fulfill their photography needs.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up, I was always a lover of the light. I had my first camera at age 8 and have albums and albums of photographs from over the years. Photography was always something I admired, but it wasn't until after completing studies in Biology, Medicine, Music & Food that I decided to take on photography as a career. I would have to say that I stay motivated by my love of capturing and preserving a feeling that I can then share with others through a photograph or video. It's a true thrill.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There are a few! Moving from the east coast to the west coast and then making the transition from photographing weddings and events to doing larger commercial shoots. Also maintaining a very physical business when I broke my ankle surfing. It took me away from being able to shoot for about a month but having a very understanding, and wonderful client base allowed me to adjust and continue to work.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's all on me - even with occasional outsourcing and help, everything comes back to me, from scheduling, bookings, and client communication, to marketing, web design, social media, and accounting... everything! And while I'm good at a lot of it, I am not an expert at most of it, which can have its challenges. Most days, it's awesome to learn new things and be in charge of everything, but some days can be overwhelming and exhausting.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Make sure you're passionate about it - whatever it is as this will help you through the more difficult aspects of running a business. It doesn't have to be perfect to start. Remember life is a marathon and not a sprint and that, like anything, businesses can take time to develop and grow.
