Live Your Best and Healthiest Life Possible - Kate van Gilst

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kate van Gilst, a registered holistic nutritionist based in Peterborough, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help women support their hormones naturally through nutrition, lifestyle, and supplements.

Tell us about yourself

I was always the girl with raging PMS. I would have to take a day off work to manage the cramps and fatigue, and the week before was full of some major mood swings and tons of acne. I had the most unpredictable periods, and I never knew when everything was going to go downhill, fast for a week or two. I took the birth control prescribed to manage these symptoms, which didn't last long; I could never remember to take it.

Fast forward a few years, and things are still pretty miserable during that week or 2 of my random cycle, but now I want to have some babies. We try, and try, and try, but nothing happens. A PCOS diagnosis, I was fed up, to say the least. This is when I FINALLY started to look toward other things like lifestyle, food, and supplements. Fast forward again to today, I have two kids, a regular cycle, with no PMS.

My mission is to help as many women as possible throughout their lives and different eras of their cycle, giving them more energy, regaining their energy, and feeling like themselves again.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is listening to patient success stories after working together.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I would say the hardest part of being a business owner is the business tasks—website maintenance, billing & bookkeeping, marketing, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My advice would be to take courses on all the things you will be using, like social media, building a website and maintaining it, and keeping your books. You also have to trust in yourself and take calculated risks.
