For a Digestive Peace of Mind - Kate Scarlata
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kate Scarlata, Founder of For a Digestive Peace of Mind, LLC., located in Medway, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My nutrition consulting business serves patients with digestive disorders, researchers creating research protocols in the GI nutrition space, and clinicians that desire evidence-based nutrition information.
Tell us about yourself
I am a 30-year veteran registered dietitian. I trained at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and, later in life, received my Master's in Public Health at the University of Massachusetts. I became interested in the food intolerance and gastroenterology intersection when I experienced a significant intestinal resection about 28 years ago.
There needed to be more interest and data on how food contributes to GI symptoms. I wanted to learn more and make a difference. I have worked hard to raise awareness of the need for more science in this area. I am known for translating existing science in the nutrition and GI space into consumer-friendly educational tools. I have a variety of educational handouts to provide patients suffering from food-related reactions and GI symptoms on my website. My goal is to give the patients concrete nutritional strategies to help them feel better.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In my area, is affiliated with a medical or academic center is the typical route. I garnered respect and attention for my work as an entrepreneur. I am very proud of that! Being a New York Times best-selling author is a 'feather in my cap.' Still, truthfully, my most important work has been my advocacy work for patients in 2 campaigns that I initiated, #IBelieveinyourStory campaign (an IBS awareness campaign) and the #EndHungerPain initiative (an awareness campaign regarding the intersection of food insecurity and food intolerance).
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Managing all the facets of the business. I would need to be able to delegate within a corporate infrastructure.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be sure you are very passionate about the work you intend to run.
- Work hard, but balance work with life's pleasures, or you will get burned out.
- Surround yourself with intelligent people.
