What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am Kate Rose, the founder of a rapidly growing jewelry redesign business called Kate Rose Modern Heirlooms. Our specialty is creating contemporary heirloom pieces from cherished family jewels. We have been making waves in the industry with our innovative approach to redesigning old and outdated jewelry into stunning, modern pieces that can be worn and appreciated for years to come.
At Kate Rose Modern Heirlooms, we offer a collaborative and personalized experience to each client, ensuring that each piece reflects their unique style while honoring the history and sentimentality of the original jewelry. We employ traditional and modern techniques to craft each piece, ensuring the highest quality of workmanship.
Sustainability is a core value of our business, and we are committed to promoting ethical and responsible practices in the jewelry industry. By repurposing and redesigning old jewelry, we reduce the need for new materials and minimize waste. We believe in creating timeless and meaningful pieces rather than disposable trends.
Our customers are individuals who have inherited jewelry that holds sentimental value but may be outdated in terms of style or design. They seek a way to update and repurpose these family heirlooms so that they can be worn and enjoyed in a contemporary setting. Our clients are conscious of sustainability and ethical practices, and they appreciate supporting small businesses and independent artisans who prioritize quality and craftsmanship.
At Kate Rose Modern Heirlooms, we understand and appreciate the history and stories behind family jewelry. We work with our clients to honor those stories while creating a new chapter in their family's legacy. Our clients seek a collaborative and personalized experience with a team of skilled artisans who can help them create a unique and meaningful piece of jewelry that reflects their personal style and values.
Tell us about yourself
The inspiration for my jewelry business came from a necklace that my mother left me after she passed away. This necklace held three generations of diamonds and had been passed down through the women in my family. The sentimental value of the piece was immeasurable, and it connected me to my mother and grandmother, and great-grandmother in a unique way. I realized that this piece represented more than just a beautiful necklace - it was a tangible link to the women who came before me, and it held their stories and memories. This realization sparked a passion in me to help others create their own tangible links to their family histories through jewelry. I wanted to help others honor the stories and memories of their loved ones by redesigning their cherished pieces into something that felt personal and meaningful.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a solo business owner, my proudest accomplishment has been successfully launching and growing my business from scratch despite having no prior experience in entrepreneurship. Coming from a background in secondary education, I had to learn everything from scratch, from branding to marketing to bookkeeping. But with determination, resourcefulness, and a willingness to learn, I was able to bootstrap my business and establish relationships with vendors, suppliers, and clients. As my business began to gain traction and I saw the positive impact it was making on my clients' lives, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment that I had never experienced before. Knowing that I had built something from the ground up with my own two hands was truly an incredible feeling, and it motivated me to continue growing and improving my business.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As a business owner, the hardest thing I have found is disconnecting from my work. Being an entrepreneur requires wearing many hats and being constantly engaged in every aspect of the business, which can make it difficult to switch off and take time for me. Even when I'm not physically working, my mind is often consumed by thoughts of the business and what needs to be done next. It can be hard to find a healthy work-life balance, especially when there are deadlines to meet and clients to serve. But I have learned that taking breaks and prioritizing self-care is essential for my mental and emotional well-being and ultimately benefits the business as well. By disconnecting and recharging, I am able to approach my work with renewed energy and focus.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Starting a business can be an intimidating journey, but with the right mindset and approach, it can be a rewarding experience. Here are a few tips I have for none looking to start, run, and grow a business today:
- Find at least one other person who is in the same phase of their business-not family or an existing friend. Starting a business can be lonely and overwhelming, especially if you're doing it alone. Finding a like-minded business person who is in a similar phase of their business can be incredibly helpful. They will understand the challenges you're facing and can offer support, feedback, and ideas. It's important to find someone who is not a family member or an existing friend because they may not have the same level of objectivity as a fellow entrepreneur.
- Don't listen to the negative voices in your head. Starting a business requires taking risks and stepping outside of your comfort zone. It's natural to feel doubt and uncertainty, but it's important not to let those negative voices hold you back. Focus on your strengths and stay true to your vision. Don't worry about what others will think or say about your business. Instead, stay focused on your goals and stay positive.
- Just try it out. There's no magic formula for starting a successful business. It's important to take the first step and try it out. Don't wait for everything to be perfect or for all the pieces to fall into place. Take action, learn as you go, and be willing to make adjustments along the way. It's important to be open-minded and adaptable as you navigate the early stages of your business. Taking that first step can lead to great things and help you build momentum.
