What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Maternity, Newborn, and Family photographer; I specialize in anything family related. My customers are families in all stages; I especially want to appeal to families who want to cherish the season they are in and value the memories we will create together!

Tell us about yourself

I have been in business for over 8 years now, but I have done photography since high school. I think I have always enjoyed the creative aspect of photography and am a people person, and I adore all aspects of photography. I was in the business world for many years after I finished my bachelor's and master's degree and loved what I did but always dreamed of having my own company and setting my own schedule. My motivation is 100% my family; I have a wonderful husband of 15 years and 3 boys who are my world! Being able to create a company that supports us, our dreams, and our aspirations is amazing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Gosh, SO many. I have won some huge awards this past year I am totally thrilled about. I have hired employees this past year and do over 850 sessions a year. Probably my biggest accomplishment, though, is being able to have my husband, who was in the accounting world (CFO level), leave his job and work with me full time, as well as open two of his own companies that he is passionate about. Both working from home and owning our own companies have allowed us to live this crazy amazing life we wouldn't trade for the world.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are a lot of hard, but 99% of the time, the good outweighs the bad. I think the biggest struggle I face is growth and how to maintain my brand reputation while not doing EVERYTHING myself!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself and work HARD. Everyday.
  2. Read Atomic Habits, and then commit to improving just 1% each day. Little improvements over a long time make HUGE changes!
  3. Do the work to set everything up well, and consult with other professionals. Invest in your company and yourself so you can truly bring the best to your clients. People are looking for companies that are offering something different and better than competitors. While your product may be the same, you can ALWAYS blow people away with amazing customer service, responding quickly, and going above and beyond.
