What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a personal trainer; I specialize in helping those 50+ (many with injuries or mobility issues) build the strength, flexibility, and endurance to keep up with their grandchildren or their travels, or both! I love working with people new to personal training or the fitness world in general, and my goal is that anyone who works with me feels better for having completed their session every single time.
Tell us about yourself
I left the legal field in 2015 and became a personal trainer after losing over 100 lbs with the help of a personal trainer. I truly wanted to pay forward the experience I had. I love empowering people to do things they never thought they would do - whether that's learning to lift weights, becoming at home and learning to love their bodies, or staying mobile enough to travel on a whim or active enough to chase grandchildren around the house and everything in between. I worked for Equinox and Bay Club prior to the pandemic. When gyms closed, I experimented with virtual training and found that the majority of my clients love it (and so do I)! I love seeing my clients get real-life wins like being able to put their carry-on in an overhead compartment on their own, get up and down off the floor with ease, or feel confident in their favorite outfit.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is building and growing a business during the pandemic, with so many adaptations and adjustments. However, my most rewarding accomplishments are my clients' wins; their successes truly light me up inside.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is that it is a full-time job on top of your full-time job. I am a personal trainer full time, and I run the business side of my business full time. What is it they say about entrepreneurs? We will work 80 hours a week for ourselves, so we don't have to work 40 hours a week for someone else. That tracks for me.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start a business you are passionate about. You are going to be spending A LOT of time in and on your business, so you should enjoy it! Plus, if you are passionate about what you do, it will come across to your clients and potential clients.
- Under promise, over deliver. Always. Expectation management is crucial to lasting relationships with clients.
- Get good at setting boundaries around business hours/work and your personal life. It is very easy to get swamped by the work of running your business and operating your business; make time for yourself, even if you have to schedule it into your calendar.
