Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Victoria Kerr, owner of Karmic Yoga, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a homegrown yoga studio in Seattle, specializing in small, intimate classes. I teach indoor and outdoor vinyasa, restorative, and moon flow yoga. My customers are seekers of their true selves, and it's been humbling to have them include me on their journey.

Tell us about yourself

I started practicing yoga about six years ago. I had been studying Buddhism for years before that, and I wanted to incorporate an exercise into my life that wasn't just about the physical aspect but tied to the mind and spirit as well. Then after the pandemic hit, I knew there would need to be more resources to help people heal on a mental and spiritual level. I think what motivates me is the feeling that I'm doing something that I truly believe in the power of. Yoga has changed my life, and I believe in it as a conduit for healing and change in others' lives as well.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, just doing it. Creating something real and tangible from the dreams inside my head. That in itself is really satisfying. But I think my biggest accomplishments are yet to come.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say time management. You have to wear a lot of hats, so you have to be very diligent about your priorities.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Assess what you want out of life and make sure the business you're starting and the way you plan on running it check all your boxes.
  2. Detach (at least a little bit) from the idea that your business is yourself. By removing or minimizing the ego, you can focus on what you have to do without a paralyzing fear of failure (if, like me, you have issues with that).
  3. Maintain boundaries for yourself and your business. Conventional wisdom says to chase every opportunity that comes your way, but not all of them will lead you where you want to go. So be discerning about what you choose to spend your time and energy on.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I believe everyone has a purpose in this life, and when you realize it for yourself, there is no better feeling. Stay true to yourself, listen to your intuition, keep the people who truly support you close, and keep moving forward.
