Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karlene Millwood, founder of Karlene Millwood International, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help corporate professionals transition to entrepreneurship with my signature EOF program, which gives them the strategies to create multiple income streams and start earning at their true income potential. I also work with middle managers to level up their leadership acumen to senior and executive leadership.

Tell us about yourself

I am here to serve. I've been given incredible gifts and talents to serve others and help to make their lives easier. I worked in Corporate Canada for 20 years in the technology space. Even then, I had an entrepreneurial mindset and would create projects on my own that benefitted the organization(s). Losing my job in 2015 was the catalyst that propelled me to pursue my passions and positioned me more firmly in the entrepreneurship space.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've accomplished a lot; however, there are a few things that I am especially proud of:

  1. The number of clients I've helped improve their business or enter the entrepreneurship space.
  2. The leaders I've trained in different organizations and the awards I've received as a result of those sessions.
  3. Creating and producing my theatrical production and two short films.
  4. And most recently, employing my skills as a Business Professor.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staying the course on days when things become overly challenging. Entrepreneurship is not a game for the weak. It requires grit, strength, and perseverance - the ability to keep going when you feel like giving up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do the research and know your industry well
  2. Don't always be the smartest one in the room. Go into rooms where you feel totally out of your league. That's where growth happens.
  3. Overcome the fear and take the leap.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't be afraid to set lofty goals. Achieving the goals is one thing, but who you become in the process is even more important. You have something to share with the world. Don't sit on it because someone is out there waiting for what you have to give.
