Wedding Stationery as Unique as You Are - Karin Webster

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karin Webster, owner of Blue Bonsai Printing, located in Woodburn, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a wedding stationery designer. I design wedding stationery from "Save The Dates" to "Thank You Notes" and everything in between. My customers are people who are looking for a unique touch for their special day.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business in June 2016 after my 35-minute commute from my corporate job turned into a 3+ hour commute. I decided in that car ride that I was going to do it. I had been wavering for a while, but after that car ride, I decided now was the time. I was able to build my business, and in June 2018, I left my corporate job and went full-time in my business. Best decision ever!!!

What motivates me is the creativity I get to enjoy every day. I also have this wonderful opportunity to be a very present and involved mom, which is the biggest gift my business gives me. That keeps me going and motivates me every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is surviving the pandemic. It makes me so sad to see businesses that have had to close their doors because of something so unexpected and terrible. I was able to make some pivots to allow me to continue to run my business even when weddings weren't happening.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Evolution. Things are constantly changing. Whether it is SEO algorithms, social media algorithms, trends... You can never get completely comfortable. Must stay adaptable and up to date.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make your business legal. With your state or local governing bodies as required in your state. Have contracts to protect you and the client if you are offering something service based. Make sure you have all your legal ducks in a row because this can take down the best businesses.
  2. No matter your business, put people first. Whether you are selling a product or service, there is a PERSON on the other end of that. Remember the golden rule- "treat others as you would like to be treated." If you have employees, they are people and should always be treated with respect. I have seen great business people get a reputation for being rude to customers or their employees, and word gets around.
  3. Always be learning. I am always looking for ways to grow my business. There are many online options in every industry, but also don't be afraid to invest in attending a conference in person. You learn, and you meet people who do the same thing you do. People who "get it" are invaluable. They will be able to pass on their experiences as well as be sounding boards. Don't be afraid to ask questions and learn.
