Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karen Hartley, a psychotherapist, facilitator and speaker based in London, UK.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a psychotherapist specialising in anxiety and stress. I help highly anxious, overthinking men and women gain confidence by building their emotional resilience.
Tell us about yourself
I'm creative at heart and had big dreams of becoming a presenter. I'm also very curious and have always wanted to know more about people's psyches and what drives them to behave a certain way. I decided to pivot from working within the media and embarked on a counseling course. The more I learned and discovered, the more my passion grew. I believe it's one of my sole purposes to provide people with a safe space, and helping clients become better versions of themselves is what motivates me each day. I also get to continue my journey of self-discovery and self-awareness.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Running a successful practice that has sustained throughout lockdown. I've invested in myself and stayed true to who I am, and it's paid off. Being able to speak about my passion via various media forums and creating a niche area of expertise as well as growing in confidence daily.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Staying motivated and the isolation of running a private practice. Also, finding a good work-life balance and ensuring you don't burn out.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be your authentic self; the world is already oversaturated with duplicates of the same thing. Stay true to who you are, and your own path will be created.
- Be consistent; nothing grows overnight, and if it does, I have to wonder about its longevity. Continue to nurture the seeds, and the plant/flower will bloom in due time.
- Ask for help, this profession can be isolating, and you only know so much. People generally love to provide insights and advice when they can. It becomes a full-circle moment.
