Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kar Brulhart, an Instagram and Video Content Strategist based in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I create bespoke social media strategies for ambitious women. I teach women how to grow organically on Instagram with intentional, strategic content—and have fun doing it. My clients are public figures, CEOs, coaches, and educators.

Tell us about yourself

If you can believe it (you're not going to believe it), I started my career as a tax accountant in my home city of Vancouver, Canada. But on a getaway to Puerto Vallarta, I met my husband on the beach, and it wasn't long before I moved to Berlin to join him. That's where I landed my dream job in social media management and marketing for the UN, introducing an app called ShareTheMeal to global audiences.

Along the way, I helped develop viral social media campaigns with partners like Apple, Facebook, and Michael Kors. A few years later, I had landed what I thought would be another dream job as head of social at a startup in NYC, only to get caught up in the first wave of pandemic layoffs—when I was nine months pregnant. That's when I made my pandemic pivot, launching a business as a social media strategist.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I poured myself into creating an Instagram account where I could teach women-owned businesses everything I had learned about marketing. In less than a year, I went from 0 followers to 45K—completely organically. And those followers translated into something more: in under 10 months, I had a 6+ figure business teaching women how to use Instagram to achieve their most daring goals.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

By far, it's knowing when to switch off. My mind is always racing a million miles a minute and thinking about all the things that I could be doing. At the same time, I have two kids under 3, and they also move a million miles a minute. Finding balance is something I've learned doesn't actually exist.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Get clear on what you want to do and who you want to help. Create a business plan and tell people about it. The more people you tell, the more accountability you'll have. Don't get caught up in all the things you think you need when you're first starting out (the website, the fancy branding, the trademarks); instead, just get really good at being consistent.
