Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kama Hagar, Holistic Wellness Coach, based in Dana Point, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a holistic wellness coach whose mission is to help the givers and people pleasers of the world learn to practice selfless self-care. Selfless self-care is a phrase I coined to help us shift our mindset from thinking of self-care as selfish to thinking of it as a way to fill our own cups to overflowing, as well as a way of life. Self-care is selfless, and it also should be selfless (meaning sustainable, conscious, and mindful).
Tell us about yourself
I have always been an empath and someone who absorbs a lot of the energy around me. It's been my M.O. to throw my own needs out the window to appease and cater to someone else for a long time. I realized how depleting this was and how inauthentic it was to live a life like this. It occurred to me that my self-care was just as important as everyone else, but the problem was I still felt guilty - selfish. As a recovering people pleaser learning to take time for myself, I needed to ensure self-care was selfless. This inspired me to create Mukama Botanica, an eco-friendly skincare line.
It was a slippery slope to the world of wellness and spirituality: where I became certified in meditation and yoga, a reiki master, and a student of Hawaiian healing. Humans are multidimensional beings, and there is no one-size-fits-all. My mission is to help people understand that all parts of you and their needs are valid and that your desire to overflow starts with a conscious, mindful, and cared-for you.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Aside from the success of my clients and the breakthroughs they've experienced, my biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been being featured in Forbes, HuffPost, CNN, and ABC News as a self-care and wellness expert.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The patience. As consistency is key (and does pay off), it can be hard to trust the process and that it truly will pay off! It's a long-haul journey, but all the work you put in adds up - or at the very least, teaches valuable lessons.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Bravery
- Self-discipline
- Self-care
