Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Drazdys, owner of Just Peachy, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Just Peachy. I sell all-natural soy wax candles with scents that put you in a Just Peachy mood! I am inspired by making these candles because I want you to be reminded of great memories in your life. I want you to be calm when you feel anxious. I want you to feel confident when you need a boost. I want you to give candles to the ones you love. I want you to light a candle and be put in a mood that makes you Just Peachy!

Tell us about yourself

I live and create in Seattle, WA. Making candles started as a hobby, but when COVID hit, I started my business officially. Each day I am motivated by the folks days that I make. When they smell my candles, they say, "oh wow, that does smell like that," or "that reminds me of this when this happened" it truly makes my day. Making candles is therapeutic for me. I go into my studio, turn on my favorite show, and mix my wax and fragrance. It is so soothing!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was having a booth at a local craft fair last year. There were over 3000 people there, and I made a lot of sales. It was great to connect with other artisans and see what amazing creations were out there.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is investing time into my business. Taking time to post on social media to keep my network up to date on what I am working on. Social media moves so fast that it is sometimes tough to keep up with the new trends.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be yourself. That is why your craft or business is so amazing. People love you for you and what you create.
  2. Do your research. Find out when taxes are due, what license you need, or even when is the last day I can order those branded stickers I want before the festival I will be at begins?
  3. Make connections. Having connections with your suppliers really helps, especially when you are in a pinch. Having those relationships is important as you grow your business.
