Sustainable Lifestyle Shop - Juniper

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katelyn Price, owner of Juniper, located in Saint John, NB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Juniper is a sustainable lifestyle store and refillery, offering sustainable clothing, skincare, gifts, and small home goods, as well as a refill station for zero/low waste alternatives, natural cleaning supplies, and personal care products. All items in the store are carefully curated, with makers and artisans chosen for their commitment to sustainable business practices.

Our customers are anyone and everyone motivated by love for our planet. Maybe you are looking to make the first step in introducing sustainable habits into your lifestyle, or maybe you have been living zero waste for years. Either way or if you fall somewhere in between, we are here for you!

Tell us about yourself

A few years ago, in response to our growing understanding of the threat of climate change, I resolved to live a more intentional and environmentally conscious lifestyle. I struggled, though, to find sustainable options for life's necessities (and life's little luxuries, too!). I figured I couldn't be the only one, and the first seeds for Juniper were planted.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishments are the everyday things, like seeing repeat customers come in with empty bottles to use the refillery. It means we are achieving our goal of helping people make small changes that make a huge difference altogether.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the most challenging part of running a business is prioritizing my least favourite aspects of the job. I love content creation, finding new makers, and curating inventory. So, naturally, I spend a lot of time on these aspects of the business. I don't love the administrative side of things (emails, emails, emails!), but I recognize that the admin stuff is crucial for a successful business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. While it's always a great idea to listen to advice, you can pick and choose the advice you follow.
  2. Be adaptable. If an aspect of your business isn't working, change it, try something new.
  3. Be engaged with the priorities of your customers.
