Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with June Lay M.S, Founder of Junefit, located in New York City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Health & Fitness Specialist. I seek to motivate, educate and empower clients to achieve their health behavior changes. Through my diverse educational and professional background, I work with clients to modify their eating habits, begin and/or improve their fitness routines, and prevent/manage chronic diseases. I employ motivational interviewing and behavioral/cognitive counseling to partner with them in their journey. I encourage them to view these changes as a creative process and challenge. Services are offered locally as well as remotely via telephone and videoconferencing. My customers are teens through adulthood and seniors.

Tell us about yourself

I began my journey with the goal of losing weight and getting in shape. My interest grew; I studied and changed my career with my first new job managing a gym. I continued my studies and began my own personal training business. I always asked myself, what is next? What can I learn next to expand my knowledge, credibility, and services? That is how my business formed and grew.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I consider it my biggest accomplishment when a client reaches their goals.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me wearing all the hats, especially marketing and selling myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Research, learn and prepare, and always be honest and fair.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I wrote this in 2001 when my website, junefit, launched. I believe and follow this philosophy today.

Living fit by June:

Being fit is primarily associated with the fitness of the body, but being fit also applies to our bodies and minds.
Being physically fit includes healthy eating and healthy habits. I address the way we think and the way we behave as a habit.
Whether we exercise or not is a habit.
The way we eat is a habit.
The way we think is a habit.
The process of change can be difficult for most of us, even if the habit we want to change appears simple.
But, habits can be changed.
New habits can be made.
Old habits can be changed or broken.
