All Things Event - JUNE BLOOM EVENTS
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joanne Rehine, founder of JUNE BLOOM EVENTS, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am an event Florist + Event Planner with a focus on weddings. I recently introduced a retail component to the business and now have an online shop offering floral-related items, monthly flower subscriptions, and fun, local, home decorative pieces. My customers are those that prioritize celebration and the importance of togetherness. Whether it's a couple about to say I do, a milestone anniversary or birthday, a bridal shower, or a brand launch, we would be honoured to be a small part of it.
Tell us about yourself
Some might describe me as loving, definitely creative, and always up for a good belly-aching chuckle. I appreciate togetherness and the art of gathering so much — whether it's preparing a yummy meal for my loved ones to enjoy, throwing a pretty party, or setting the table and centering it with a fun grouping of flowers — Creatively, these bring such fulfillment, and I take none for granted.
Having started out in the industry as a chef-turned-event planner and eventually adopting my love for flowers and design into the business, it just seemed fit to have the two things I'm so passionate about is what my business offers. I treasure the process of both planning and floral design and consider myself pretty fortunate to do both.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
This is a tricky one as often I feel that has yet to happen. But if I take a step back, reflect and look back on the recent years, I am pretty proud of how my small business pivoted and stayed afloat through such challenging and uncertain times. I started up an online shop during a global pandemic. I went from wedding florist to retail florist, all while learning along the way. Creating employment for yourself by doing something that brings you joy is pretty special and an accomplishment in itself, I think.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It can often be pretty lonely. Especially if your a small business and don't have permanent staff, you can often feel that it's all on you, and wearing many hats can be overwhelming.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure that you're driven by passion and that you have a genuine love for what it is you want to do.
- Be open to failing, don't let that deter you. Allow that to be your motivation to try again and again. There is a lot of trial and error when starting up. Be teachable open to guidance and criticism. Often, people, your peers, can be your greatest teachers. Learn from them, be a sponge.
- Look for opportunities to gain experience, volunteer your time, work alongside like-minded professionals in your industry. Hands-on experience is everything.
