RD Nutrition Counseling - Julien Chamoun
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julien Chamoun, founder of RD Nutrition Counseling, located in Totowa, NJ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
As a Registered Dietitian, I have my own private practice where I help clients with their nutrition-related goals. Clients vary depending on nutritional goals, but most are looking for help with weight loss and gastrointestinal issues. I also work with clients who have diabetes, heart conditions, kidney issues, and those getting weight loss surgery. Insurance is accepted, which makes it easy for most people to receive nutritional counseling for little to no cost to them.
Tell us about yourself
As someone who always had a passion for nutrition and fitness, I wanted to enter a field where I could take my interest and help others. After becoming a Registered Dietitian, I began working in a hospital but felt my expertise would be best suited in a private practice setting. You get to spend more time with clients in private practice; tailoring plans specific to their goals. In a hospital, there was not enough time to get someone to change their dietary habits (the average hospital stay is only 4-5 days). In a private practice setting, I get to see my clients change over longer periods of time, and that keeps me motivated.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to enjoy what I do every day. Some days are challenging, but my biggest accomplishment is I am running my business today with the same passion I had when I first opened.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
There is not enough time in the day. Having that work/life balance is challenging, and it can be hard to make time for others when the business is so demanding of your time. I have made it a priority to spend time with family and friends and not let the business consume every waking hour of my day. It can be difficult to step away from work (mentally and physically), but as a Registered Dietitian, I have to remind myself that having a good work/life balance is important for my overall health.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a business plan.
- Stay current and up to date.
- Be Patient.
