Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Mollo, owner of JulieMollo.com, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My super sparkly business started as an accident in 2008 when I cold-emailed Katy Perry’s manager and then created the iconic, fruit-inspired ensembles that she wore during her breakout years! The business has seen so many different versions of itself, and I love every single one of them for what they brought to the next phase. Our line of accessories is inspired by my early work in stage wear and costume design and always has a very retro, rock & roll vibe! ! My customers are super fun people who like to bring a tiny bit of joy with them everywhere they go, and I love designing products that make them smile!
Tell us about yourself
Hi! I'm Julie Mollo. I am a super fun bag lady, designer & owner over at JulieMollo.com! I make super sparkly, fun & flirty products for anyone who wants to add some more fun to their life! My customers inspire me daily. Seeing Mollowers enjoy what we do and incorporate our products into their lifestyle is inspiring and makes me want to continue improving and bringing them more! I love knowing that so many of our customers buy our clutches as gifts - I'm honored that they love our brand enough to want to share it with their friends and family!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My team. I worked as a solopreneur for a very long time. Being able to have other people on my team to delegate different jobs is absolutely my biggest accomplishment. I am most proud of and by far the biggest thing that allowed my (now our!) business to grow.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As a creative business owner, I am obsessed with the products and branding of my business; the taxes, numbers & legalities are always the hardest part because it's the scary, not the fun stuff that you don't ever get to be in control of. The longer I've had my business, the more that my role has changed from being more business and less creative, mostly because I've learned so much more about the important, boring stuff along the way!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Become absolutely obsessed with it!
- When you're making scary decisions or choices, or afraid to go after something, reach out to someone, etc. Always remember that you have nothing to lose, especially when starting out!
- Put yourself out there in as many ways as you possibly can! Make your brand loud and proud on the internet and in real life! Don't be afraid to always tell as many people as you can about it! Get excited!
