Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Kusma, a Multi-genre, award-winning author based in Prospect, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a multi-genre, award-winning author dubbed "Queen of Horror" on Twitter for "a new take on horror & writing as a form of art" and pen short stories, children's books, inspirational books, educational books, YA, and speculative fiction novels, many with my writing partner, Derek R. King. I have a fondness for psychology and philosophy, all finding a place on the pages of the pieces I write. Several of my paranormal and horror stories and a few poems are available in audio format on my YouTube channel.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Health and Wellness, a Master of Science in Health Education, and a Master of Art in English, Creative Writing, and Fiction. My health sciences studies generated interest in the mind-body-spirit connection, and I write about the impact our strengths and weaknesses have on our human experience. In particular, I'm fascinated with the Jungian Shadow.

Tell us about yourself

I'm motivated to create, whether writing, teaching writing skills, or designing graphics each day because I love what I do. It's that simple. I do what I love every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Well, I'm not sure I've achieved that yet because I'm aiming for the stars. I have been awarded several awards, and that feels great, but reading reviews from fans really makes me feel great about my work.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As an author, I'm self-employed, so I must keep pushing to grow my income primarily through marketing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand who your customer is.
  2. Understand what differentiates your product (book) from everyone else's and speak to that.
  3. Understand what is and isn't working and constantly adapt.
