Strong Is Beautiful - Julie Green Fitness

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Green, founder of Julie Green Fitness, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run an online fitness coaching business geared towards women (but I do help men as well!) I help women who are simply lost in what they should be doing and where they should start. This is for beginners but also people who don't fit the typical "gym bro" stereotype. Someone who has tried MANY diet & exercise plans but never seems to stick to it bc the plan never works with their lifestyle (they live REAL lives, with kids, work, vacations, FUN). They are guilty of starting over every Monday. They know they value health and fitness, but restriction never seems to work. They want to show up for themselves but can't figure out how that looks on the good days vs. the bad days. They want MORE for themselves and have health and fitness feel like a natural extension of who they are as a person.

Tell us about yourself

I was never hugely into health and fitness when I was younger. I dabbled in some sports, but mostly so I could stay inside during recess. Once I had graduated college (for Fashion merchandising of all things), I had gained the typical freshman 15.. (20....). That's when I started at the gym. But I couldn't figure out why I was never getting results. I hired a trainer and loved it so much that I switched careers. I've been in the health & fitness industry for over a decade now, but only since Oct 2018 have been running my own business. (I was actually fired from my job but had been planning on starting my own business; it just happened sooner than expected. I truly believe the universe gave me exactly what I wanted each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building an online business that feels just as personal as an in-person business does, and all the women that feel safe/welcome here. Also, surpassing my full-time job salary with an online business during a pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning how to manage your energy. You wear so many hats in your business; you will burn yourself out really fast if you don't have boundaries in place for yourself. It's ok to ask for help. Know you are NEVER alone; someone else is or has gone through the same thing as you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get started even if you don't feel ready. You are always going to be battling some type of fear at each stage of your entrepreneurial journey. Waiting until you feel confident or until everything lines up perfectly is a sure-fire way for you to NEVER succeed.
  2. You can have all the knowledge in the world, but if you aren't relatable to your customer, they won't see you.
  3. You have got to work on your mindset. Entrepreneurship brings up so much inside of us, and many times we are at it alone (in reality, all of us are struggling with the same things!). Running your own business brings some of the greatest JOYS, but it can also bring up a lot of things we never thought would be on this ride. Working on these will help you ride out the dips with confidence.
