Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Ehrmantraut, owner of Julie Erin Designs, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an artist, and my medium is mainly digital at the moment since I purchased an iPad. I create cute and fun illustrations and pattern designs which I sell through print-on-demand websites. I also share my journey, along with tips and tutorials to help other artists make an income from their art, on my blog, YouTube channel, and online courses through Skillshare.
Tell us about yourself
I created my business after I graduated from University and realized how few creative jobs were available. While working a full-time job, I started putting my art up on a few print-on-demand websites. After making a few sales, I saw the potential there and began uploading more of my work as well as documenting my journey through my blog. It has now grown into a sustainable business that gives me a really nice side income. What motivates me is the dream of being able to make a living from my art and have the freedom to pursue my creative passions.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Mainly just building something for myself that is all my own.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Finding time and motivation to work on my business while working a full-time job is the hardest thing for me right now.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start now.
- Embrace the fact that you're going to suck at first.
- Never stop learning and growing.
