Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Davis, Founder of JMD Productivity Training, located in Colorado Springs, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
At JMD Productivity, we help entrepreneurs and business owners reset their habits and patterns so they can get the RIGHT things done instead of trying to do everything so they can incur massive and intentional growth in their businesses.
My clients are mostly women who have reached the point in their businesses where they know something has to give and are stuck in a place of non-growth. They know they want more clients or to offer new packages or implement new offerings, but there is no bandwidth to do so. They feel like they are sacrificing their lives for their businesses--they are no longer in control.
Tell us about yourself
Before I launched JMD Productivity, I had another business; before that, I was a high school English teacher. As a teacher, I was highly organized and efficient in the way I ran my classroom. These habits and skills transferred over into my first business. What I found was that many women that I networked with and worked within that particular business kept asking me how I was building the business. I was working as few hours as I did. I started presenting to groups on calendar control, and from there, my business was born--that's the short version!
Every day I come to work in my business, I am so excited by the difference I am making in my clients' lives. They are doing things they never thought possible and experiencing massive growth while not working more hours! They are not only experiencing their best business, they are living their best lives. It's incredibly satisfying to know that I am part of their journey and helping them be as close to having it all possible.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been that I started from just an idea. I created my curriculum for my courses, and it worked and continues to do so. What a great feeling to have been able to take my knowledge and create something that has helped so many people. I had opportunities to run others' programs and buy into what had been developed before, but I knew what I had was different and special and stood in my area of genius and made it happen. That knowledge is incredibly gratifying.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things, I would say, is to have patience. We want it all now! The way that society is today, everything is about instant gratification. In business, everything takes time. People have to learn what we do and engage with us. And there is a lot of trial and error and trial by fire when building a business. We have to constantly adjust what we're doing to whether people are engaging or not! Patience is the only way to make it through. And that's not easy.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, make sure that what you're going to offer is something people want and need. Second, hire a coach--you have to invest in learning! You have the idea, but someone else knows how to sell or how to build what you see, or how to market it. Get support and help! Third, network, network, network. Meet people who might be clients and who will be the community to support you no matter what. Truly, don't do this thing alone
