Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julia Hoagland, founder of Julia Hoagland Team at Compass and JH Advisors, LLC, located in New York City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My real estate team, the Julia Hoagland Team, has helped sellers and buyers of NYC residential real estate for 18 years. We have closed over $900M in deals, and we consistently rank in the top 1% nationwide. We specialize in luxury condos, co-ops, and townhouses in Manhattan and western Brooklyn and work with a local, national and international clientele. We differentiate ourselves by maximizing value through strategic positioning, working to identify areas of maximum leverage, and executing our proprietary systematic and methodical approach to ensure all aspects of deals are expertly attended to in a timely manner.

Tell us about yourself

I am motivated each day by my passion for making a positive difference. Giving is a joy and is both selfless and selfish since I get so much back. In my professional life, this takes many forms: giving a path to the dream of homeownership to buyers, helping create room for the dreams of sellers that can be realized once their sale closes, giving business and professional growth opportunities to my team, giving back to the industry by teaching Continuing Education at REBNY, and giving helpful connections to my networks.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am an entrepreneur who built and grew my eight-person team from scratch, and I now lead a nationally and internationally top-ranked multi-million dollar revenue organization. I am proud of my team and the culture we have built and proud of the reputation we've built in our industry. We love providing value for our clients. It's extremely satisfying and gratifying.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Successful entrepreneurs typically start out as sole proprietors, and often the biggest impediment to growth is an inability to let go of control. This was very hard for me: I did a lot of professional and personal work to detach from the need to be involved in everything. I choose to work with everyone on our team because they're each rockstar at what they do, and by getting out of their way, I not only help my business but also support their growth. Leading talented and passionate professionals is a true joy and also a responsibility I don't take lightly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire an assistant before you think you can afford one, and delegate everything you can. Leveraging yourself by delegating is the fastest way to turbocharge your business.
  2. The abundance mentality is powerful: if you don't already have it, adopt it. Business (and life) is not a zero-sum game. "We could get so much more done if we just stopped caring who gets the credit" is one of my favorite quotes.
  3. Own mistakes and make sure to take the opportunity of learning from them, improve systems, get better, and continue on the journey toward greatness.
