Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Horowitz, Owner, and CEO of JTH Wellness, located in White Plains, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

JTH Wellness is a holistic health and wellness business helping people improve their gut health, relationship with food, exercise, and their bodies through one-on-one nutrition, lifestyle, fitness, and mindset counseling. I specialize in helping those struggling with digestive issues, a poor relationship with food and exercise, body image issues, anxiety, and low confidence, who have been failed by conventional methods, restore their health, confidence, and enjoyment of life naturally through dietary and lifestyle changes, natural supplement protocols, personal training, and energy work.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner certified by NTA, Personal Trainer & Corrective Exercise Specialist certified by NASM, and Emotion Code Practitioner certified by Discover Healing. My own personal health struggles lead me to discover my passion for helping others. For years, I battled chronic digestive issues such as uncomfortable bloating, acid reflux/GERD, gastritis, and irregular bathroom habits, along with fatigue, brain fog, acne, eczema, inflammation, and joint and muscle pain. I tried various medications, doctors, and procedures, yet I still felt terrible every single day and was left feeling hopeless. My health issues lead me to develop anxiety, depression, food fears, body image issues, low self-esteem, and a loss of enjoyment in life. After years of suffering, failed by conventional medicine, I knew there had to be a way to address the root of my health issues that would allow me to heal truly, so I set out to find a solution. Through my own research, I found the world of holistic health, which changed my life. This led me to discover that years of living with unresolved digestive issues caused me to develop SIBO, a bacterial overgrowth in the intestines. I finally found the answers I was looking for and set on the path to healing. I overhauled my diet and lifestyle, worked on improving my mindset and mental health, started using natural supplements, and watched my symptoms disappear. Eventually, I decided to leave my 9-5 corporate job and go back to school to pursue this passion for health and wellness so that I could help others. What motivates me to do what I do every single day is knowing what it's like to be in the shoes of someone struggling with their health. No one should have to be left in the dark struggling day after day without relief or answers, which is why I've made it my mission to empower others to take back their health and happiness for life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been the many clients I've successfully helped overcome their health issues. Watching my clients overcome digestive issues, improve their relationship with food and exercise, get stronger in the gym, and regain confidence and happiness has made me feel truly successful in my work. Changing the lives of others is the most rewarding experience and is what keeps me going every single day!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is always working yet feeling like I'm never doing enough. Running a small business is a full-time job when you're responsible for every aspect! You're your own boss, so time management and making a consistent schedule is important to getting things done in order to feel accomplished.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go for it! If you have a passion, pursue it! Don't let your fears hold you back because with great risk comes great reward, and honestly, there's nothing more rewarding than doing what you love. Leaving my corporate job to pursue my passion was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
  2. If you're just starting out, it may be helpful to have a part-time job or side hustle that allows you to work on your business at the same time so that you have consistent income while working on building your business. It often takes time to grow and gain traction, so having that steady income source can take the stress off of getting things going.
  3. It's okay not to have all the answers, and it's okay to ask for help! Part of starting a business involves learning as you go, as you'll be faced with new challenges and opportunities along the way. Each speed bump is an opportunity to learn something new, so don't be so hard on yourself if you find yourself struggling with something! Reach out to colleagues, advisors, and experienced people in this area, as often time they are more than willing to share their knowledge and help!
