Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Todd Smith, Co-Founder of Joy Organics, located in Fort Collins, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Joy Organics is a family-owned and operated premium CBD company specializing in high-quality USDA organic CBD products.

Tell us about yourself

We started Joy Organics to help the millions of people suffering from pain, anxiety, insomnia, and a long list of other health issues. We are motivated to help people restore their health and enjoy a better quality of life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have built a top 20 CBD brand with less than $1million in capital and have not had to raise money. This is because we've made great decisions over the last four years, especially during COVID.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The life of an entrepreneur is not easy. One of the most challenging things is handling the stress and pressure of running a business. Every day you are faced with new challenges and how you handle those challenges not only impacts your success but also your quality of life as a business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get in the game - Get in the game as quickly as you can and refine as you go.
  2. Don't go into business with your spouse. If you do go into business with your spouse, set boundaries and don't talk about the business 24/7.
  3. Your greatest risk is "What you don't know, you don't know!" - This is especially true when starting a business in a field outside your specialty. While dreaming about getting rich is fun, make sure you spend equal time assessing your risks. Overconfident people with big egos are most likely to fail when starting a new business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The old adage "It will take longer and cost more than you think" is especially true when starting a new business. Starting a business on a shoestring budget is a recipe for failure. I would also highly recommend reviewing your business with other business owners you respect and when you do, focus on the downside of starting your business. Don't go into these conversations looking for others to drink your juice. Instead, please pay close attention to their advice.
