Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in web development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joshua Smith, Founder of Josh's Web Dev, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business primarily involves building, improving, and fixing online stores. I also build websites for small businesses and professionals who want to showcase their work, so I have all kinds of clients.

Tell us about yourself

It began as learning how to code so I could land a software engineering job. As I learned more and more, I started offering my service to friends and family, building simple websites for their small businesses. It didn't take long to realize that there were a lot of people out there that were willing to pay for this service, so I made my own website and decided to learn more about front-end development and e-commerce. Eventually, I couldn't keep up with my sales job and my web development projects. I wanted to quit but didn't for a long time because I couldn't give up the stability. Finally, I quit when it came time to choose, and thankfully it worked out.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, the first few steps were the hardest. I would never have created anything if I hadn't left my job to do my own thing.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is knowing you're ultimately responsible for the success or failure of your business - sink or swim. It'll help if you thrive under pressure because it's always going to be there.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Have short-term and long-term goals, map out your time every day, and don't rely on motivation to carry you each day. Some days are good, some bad; stay disciplined.
