Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Josh Perry, Performance Coach & Optimization Strategist, based in Port Orange, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a performance coaching business that empowers driven leaders who are stressed, overwhelmed, and feel stuck in optimizing their personal & professional performance.

Tell us about yourself

Towards the end of my career as a pro BMX athlete, successfully battling multiple brain tumors and other injuries along the way, I learned so much in regard to physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health optimization that helped me improve my performance in all areas of my life. The more I shared my passion for what I was learning and experiencing, the more others reached out to gain my support and leadership.

This evolved into me speaking at events and conferences and coaching others in implementing my process to gain similar results in their lives. I became so passionate about helping others in their life that I decided to retire from BMX and go all in on what I consider my calling in life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is fulfilling my first dream to become a professional athlete at such a young age and turning my experiences of overcoming hardship along the way to maintaining that dream into a business of serving others in their respective areas of life.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say the hardest thing for me was my relationship with my mind influencing me to push harder and harder, not realizing it was insecurity fueling that drives, and it just made things harder when I wasn't taking time to take care of myself with proper sleep, self-satisfying things outside of "work," and down time to recover mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

I was experiencing massive imposter syndrome leaving BMX for my coaching/speaking business today as I identified so much as my former athlete self rather than the vision I was working towards in real-time. It took hiring a coach to help me recognize it, work through it, and foster grace, self-compassion, and humility to ask for help in the business world.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prioritize your health: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I see it all the time in my line of work, as well as in my own past experiences when I did not prioritize my health in those four main categories. You may think you're "fine," but not, but that will catch up at some point, and I doubt anyone wants to become sick, tired, burnout out, or make life more difficult for those around them.
  2. Have a vision for what YOU want to bring to the world that you believe does not yet exist in the way you believe is needed.
  3. Have the humility and courage to seek our mentors or coaches that can lead you to where you want to go because I can tell you from personal experience it will take so much more time, pain, and suffering to get somewhere on your own if you don't give up before then.
