Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jordyn Lee, Founder of Jordyn Lee Counseling LLC., located in Colorado Springs, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who started my own private practice called Jordyn Lee Counseling LLC. My passion is providing therapy for teens and young adults who are struggling with eating disorders and other mental health concerns. With this, I love educating and giving support to parents who have a teenager struggling with an eating disorder. I provide individual, family, and group therapy both in person and virtually.
Tell us about yourself
I graduated with my Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2016. Since graduation, I've worked in several different settings, such as providing in-home family therapy as well as being an admissions clinician and primary therapist at an eating disorder treatment center. As I shared earlier, I have a passion for working with people struggling with eating disorders. Helping people heal their relationship with food and their body is what motivates me and brings meaning to my life. I've wanted to do this work since my high school years, and it brings me so much joy to see my clients finding freedom.
I started my own private practice in the fall of 2020 and have been in full-time private practice providing mental health counseling since March 2021. Prior to this, I was working at a treatment center, and while I loved the community and being in close proximity to other therapists, I wanted more autonomy and flexibility. Since COVID, there's been a huge need for mental health providers, specifically for eating disorders, so it was the perfect time to start my own practice.
I've wanted to own my own therapy practice since graduate school. My undergraduate degree is in accounting, so starting a private practice seemed like a great fit for me! I love helping people and providing therapeutic services, but I also enjoy business, numbers, and spreadsheets. One day I'd love to be able to coach other therapists who want to start their own private practice as well.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am very blessed to be able to say that my caseload was full with clients within the first few weeks of me leaving my last job and moving into full-time private practice. Typically it takes therapists several months to build up a practice, so I was building my practice while also working a full-time job. It was a busy season, but definitely worth it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me would be figuring out a healthy work/life balance. As a therapist, in general, this can be challenging, but owning my own business makes this even more complicated. I've worked hard to create boundaries in all areas of my life, including work, but these also need to be flexible at times due to the nature of owning a business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- This might seem obvious, but have a game plan and action steps. This helped keep me find stability throughout the very busy season of starting my business.
- Get support from mentors and/or people you look up to who already have a successful business.
- Have a vision, and don't lose sight of this. It's easy to get distracted with all of the details of running a business, but don't lose sight of the bigger picture and your WHY.
