Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jordyn G, Founder of Jordyn Alison Designs, located in Flushing, MI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Jordyn Alison Designs is a lifestyle brand that has bright + cheerful stationery and gifts to bring joy to your daily life. I sell vinyl stickers, greeting cards, sun catchers, and more. My customers enjoy florals, cute animals, and bright colors!
Tell us about yourself
I first started creating greeting cards when my husband (then boyfriend) went off to Boot Camp. At the time, there weren't any long-distance cards on the market that accurately portrayed those emotions. As time went on, my brand evolved to be more of a brand that encourages you to look for the positives.
I'm motivated by my love for design. Some days I wake up and design something that may never see the light of day just to get the sparks flowing.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My Charity Collection. Growing up, I'd say that I wanted to be a millionaire just so I could donate it and help people. Once I started my business, I realized that I could make a small difference in the world, so I started a collection of stickers and cards (and at one point apparel) that donated to various causes like The Ocean Cleanup, Wildlife Conservation, National Alliance on Mental Illness, and more.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The biggest thing I struggle with is wanting to do all the things but never having enough time and then getting disappointed in myself. I have big hopes and dreams but sometimes putting that into realistic action steps is a challenge of mine. I also compare myself to others a lot, and I'm working on remembering that we are all on different paths.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be authentic to yourself and keep doing what makes you happy. People love seeing your passion and excitement.
- Don't get stuck in decision paralysis. Sometimes the scariest decisions end up being the best ones for you! But if you never try, you'll never know.
- Have fun. Social media is always changing, and new apps and features are always popping up. I know it's easy to get into the "social media sucks" side of things, but if you take the pressure off of trying to go viral and just have fun with things, I think you'll start to enjoy it more!
