What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business spans several sectors - I write, illustrate, craft/create, and photograph and I am also a trainer/Learning & Development specialist - my customers could be anyone and everyone!

Tell us about yourself

I've always been creative, from a kid making things from cereal boxes and sticky tape to being an adult who knits things, creates images or designs and delivers training interventions - my early education was in the creative fields (BA in Illustration), but I also have several qualifications in training/teaching too. My motivation? To create - whether that's digitally on my iPad for use on print-on-demand sites or illustrations to go into my training programmes. I love creating.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I always think it is yet to come. If I was pressed, I'd say it is being able to do what I do, still enjoy it at 57, and look forward to the next 10, 15, to 20 years of doing the same.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Paying the bills! It's a balancing act, which is why I'm glad I can do freelancing, work on contracts, etc., to make money - there are so many influences out there that you can't control that can and will affect your income streams, so try to find something you can do in lean times to keep the wolf from the door!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find something you love.
  2. Find some way to earn if money is tight but make sure it is temporary.
  3. Work hard.
