Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ryan Jones, Founder of Jones Coaching Services LLC., located in Boise, ID, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a retired IT and business leader who started a coaching business to help others. I focus on three pillars of coaching:
- My love and passion for helping people become financially independent. My ideal clients are married couples making over six figures but still living paycheck to paycheck and not planning for their future.
- I'm a proven business coach who has a strategic mind to help small business leaders get more from their businesses. My ideal business coaching clients are small business owners with established businesses who are struggling to take their business to the next level.
- I'm a leadership coach.
I do not focus on cookie-cutter leadership principles but rather on 1-on-1 coaching sessions that meet leaders where they are at with their roles and teams and help them achieve more.
Tell us about yourself
After 29 years of working for three global corporations, I discovered my calling as a coach. I'm the son and brother of a family of coaches. I grew up watching my dad and brothers coach all kinds of sports, but watching them coach basketball was my favorite. In my corporate career, coaching was natural for me. I trained, coached, and consulted with clients, engineers, managers, and leaders. Over the years, I've found personal finance coaching to be a passion. I love helping people achieve more and giving back after a successful career.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've stayed on solid ground. I live and breathe what I coach, and I enjoy assisting others in finding their way. I believe that through this journey, I've stayed authentic and maintained the highest integrity. Those I've helped so far have found a path to their mastery, legacy, or financial freedom and realize I'm not here to be a hero but just a guide for those who desire assistance.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I'd say fear. Fear has a way of paralyzing you as a business owner. For me, this business is a way of giving back and helping more than a source of necessary income. However, many of my clients live and breathe their business and face an enormous amount of pressure and face greater fears than I do but fear truly is the hardest thing to overcome and to keep at bay.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be grounded in your "why." Having a firm foundation of why you want to start, run, and grow your business will help you stay focused and motivated day-over-day.
- Understand the pain of your customers by listening to and being in tune with them. Your understanding, empathy, and desire to ease their pain will carry you a long way.
- Have a support system. If you don't have a mentor, coach, or just people who inspire you, it will be a long and grueling grind. Having the right people in your corner will uplift, inspire, and keep you on track with your purpose.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
As business owners, we often rely on people who actually don't understand what we are going through. They may mean well, talk a good game, or tell you what you want to hear, but having an honest and thought-provoking coach can make a difference not only to the success of your business but your personal growth as an owner and leader. Failure to invest in yourself over time will lead to your business's failure. Owners can be their own worst enemies in the long run. Don't be that person. Focus on growing yourself as much as your business, and always make it a great day!
