Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jolie Ensign, Owner of Jolie Nutrition & Fitness, located in Durango, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Jolie Nutrition and Fitness. My clients are mostly local to Durango, CO, but I have had clients in various states and even outside the country in Canada and Brazil. My clients range in age from 20s to into their 80s—all gender identities. I would say the majority of my clients, though, are women dealing with hormonal changes as they get older.

Tell us about yourself

I started working on my business after I learned my Health Promotion/Wellness position at the local hospital was being eliminated. I took it as an opportunity to go out on my own. Thinking of my clients and their motivation and readiness to change motivates me every day. I know I need to be a good role model for them. I seek to earn their trust and respect and need to practice what I preach. To know and understand what they are going through every day as I work on my own personal goals and intentions. I can relate to them and hold space for them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Most recently, my biggest accomplishment was being voted 1st place for Best Nutritionist in Durango, CO. This is something I have strived for the last few years. It took building trust and rapport with my clients and local providers that refer to me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Setting boundaries. Sticking to your personal schedule and values. Being consistent and reliable. Learning from mistakes and giving yourself grace and space. There is always some insecurity, but believing in yourself, your skills, knowledge, and value. Believing I am providing a valuable service and helping folks change their lives.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Network, reach out to other business owners in your field, and schedule a one to one with them. More than likely, they will love sharing their background, experiences, and tips and tricks for running their business.
  2. Choose your software wisely. Will it help you be more productive?
  3. Know what you aren't good at or don't want to spend time doing and find someone who does!
