Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joia Nuri, CEO of In The Public Eye Communications, located in Silver Spring, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an ICF-certified Executive Leadership and Public Speaking Coach. My clients are women who sit in leadership positions.

Tell us about yourself

I started working on my business in the late 1990s. I worked in network television news, and the hours were too stressful and long. In addition, I had a daughter who was entering her teen years, so I wanted to be home. So I set up shop. What I love most about what I do is that I can help women leaders identify their inner critic and move from their zone of excellence into their zone of genius.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is surviving. I have been through economic downturns, shifts in the marketplace, and multiple changes in social media. But still, I stand. I have learned to be nimble while staying faithful to what I am called to do.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I would not identify what you have to do as a business person as being hard. But it does require commitment and consistency. You have to have a vision, strategy, a to-do list, and the will to execute. Never be afraid to ask for help, so surround yourself with people with the same drive and demand for excellence as you do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips I would offer any new business owner are:

  1. Make sure the business you're running makes you happy.
  2. Hire a financial coach to make sure your books are strong.
  3. Quiet the inner critic that constantly tells you to want you can't do.
