What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work with individuals and organizations to help them achieve their goals and aspirations more consistently.

Tell us about yourself

I started in the information consulting business over 40 years ago with a large consulting firm. Over the succeeding years, I held various positing in information technology management and consulting business development. I started Headway Strategies to continue to help individuals and businesses do better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Developing a reputation for successfully working with people in different environments and industries.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Prospecting and lead generation take a lot of time and focus. You need to have a clear explanation of what you do for your potential client, but at the same time, you need to listen to what their needs are before you propose a solution. In the consulting /coaching business, you have the risk of the project ending without a repeat engagement.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Credentialing yourself – I wrote a book, The Compass Approach”  on how to manage your business around the 4 points of the compass. I had an internet radio show called “Making Headway” and interviewed different individuals about topics relevant to small businesses. I had a show on the local cable channel called the “Voice of Business,” which was rebranded to “Keep It Local,” where I interviewed local businesses about what they can offer. I did workshops and lectured at the college level. Read publications and books written by others in your industry  -- look for new ideas and techniques that you can deliver.
  2. Cash Reserves – Know how much you need while you are developing your business.
  3. Network,  Network, and Network – you never know where your next opportunity will come from. Meet new people and help them build connections with others. Rekindle old contacts. Be visible in your community. Build up a network of practitioners who could help you with projects that you land. Join and participate in organizations that can help you expand your network.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
