Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joe Maddux, Founder of Level Up Financial Coaching, located in Missoula, MT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help burned-out professionals create a path to financial independence. My clients are Type-A high-achievers that are winging it with their finances but looking to take the next step. With common-sense money systems, intentional spending, and accountability, they make work optional or pursue new careers that actually fill their souls each day.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Joe Maddux, and I retired at 36 years old. A decade as an engineer, working 60-80 hour weeks and spending on credit, left my health in shambles at the low point of my life. My business started, without me knowing at the time, with myself as the first client. I created systems for my money that allowed me to pay off over $80,000 in debt within a year and rewrite my money story. With intentional spending and clear goals, I was able to turn from a place of despair to embracing early retirement in 2020. Sitting on a beach all day isn't my style, so I've made it my mission to help others find their exit plan from the corporate world. I'm motivated every day by helping people find confidence with their money and translate their new skillset into unique entrepreneurial ventures and a life more fully lived.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every time I see a client go from guessing and fear surrounding money to a place of complete financial confidence, it is my greatest accomplishment. Everyone can be good with money and pursue the things that fill them with happiness.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me has been offloading the parts of the business that I don't love. When you are first getting started, you have to do everything. But as you learn the things that light you up and are within your zone of genius, I've found it challenging but entirely worthwhile to offload the parts that drag you down. It's critical to keep your energy high and show up as best you can for each and every client.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Messy action is better than standing still. It's better to make a little bit of progress and learn, tweak, improve, and iterate your process than to try and get things perfect from the start.
- Add value, and business will find you. People will pay you for the value you bring to their lives, and your professional network will flock to you if you always aim to provide more than you take.
- You need a support system. Whether it's a coach, professional network, or online community, surround yourself with people that will challenge you to make the most of your business and support you through obstacles that arise.
