Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jo Travers, founder of The London Nutritionist, located in London, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide evidence-based nutrition advice for anyone who needs a bit of help with their diet. I have a clinic and work with businesses providing workshops and online content, but I also work with companies providing brand communication and the media. I specialise in weight management, gut health, infant and child nutrition, and eating disorders.

Tell us about yourself

I originally decided to become a dietitian because I love food and science, and I really enjoyed working with people. Nutrition and Dietetics fall right in the middle of these topics, so it was a natural choice. However, I came to this realisation late! I fell into retail when I left school and ended up managing shops before becoming an operations manager for a retail start-up. Eventually, I realised that I wasn't motivated by making more and more money for someone else and that I needed to help people. This led to a lengthy retraining at the university. During that period, I had a baby, and when I qualified, I needed something that fit in with my family. So I became a freelancer and absolutely loved it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to earn a living while still being able to spend time with my kids. It's a tricky manoeuvre, but I have pulled it off!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Remembering your priorities and your mission statement. It's easy to lose sight of these things when you need to earn money, but I have learned that if someone wants to pay you to do something that doesn't fit in with either of these things, it will ultimately lead to bad business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

There is a way to start right now, and starting is the only way you are going to get to where you want to be. If you are creative, you can start very cheaply, whatever you do. For example, I had no money to rent a clinic room when I started, so I did home and office visits. This took more time, but I had time. What I didn't have was money. Eventually, I saved enough to invest in a room.
