What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a coach, consultant, and facilitator. My clients are often people in a life or work transition, looking to make small or huge shifts in the way they show up in the world. I work with many women, those in helping fields (social justice, education, health), art, and parents.

Tell us about yourself

As a community organizer for 13 years, I spent as much time building relationships and creating spaces for personal empowerment as I did on political strategizing. That first part of my work is true love, so coaching was a natural progression after becoming a mom.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Asking an organization to fly me out to lead a retreat for them and having them say yes. I let the voice that wanted that be stronger than any voice of self-doubt.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Getting myself on social media is tough. It's not a space where I feel authentic. I am discovering how to be an entrepreneur on my own terms.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Think about who you need in your corner and search those folks out to be your personal "board."
  2. Prepare and celebrate flopping. It's critical to fail at some things and celebrate the learning. That's a key perspective.
  3. Build out your scaffolding - what are all the pieces you can put in place before you start to make the road smoother -- and a realistic timeline with plenty of room for flopping.
