Developing Innovative Strategies - Jim Pacey
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jim Pacey, President of Pacey Consulting and Coaching, located in Austin, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I do (mainly) nonprofit business consulting and coaching. I have written leadership workshops on Emotional Intelligence, Intelligent Change, and Connecting With Others. I have also led school district parent discussion groups around potential school closures.
Tell us about yourself
After working for the YMCA for over 35 years, I decided to continue empowering others through my workshops and consulting. I love working with smaller nonprofits and small groups by bringing my expertise and considerable research into my business. I'm one that wants to continue to learn and improve myself by staying at the forefront of business trends and researching the current thought leaders on their work.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment to date is taking the idea of an emotionally intelligent workshop and making it a reality at the University of Texas. I get to work with an incredible psychology professor, and we learn from each other. We have been able to provide our workshop over 10 times over the past few years with graduate students and business leaders. That has allowed me the opportunity to pick and choose the consulting and coaching I do.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It's hard not to get caught up in trying to do too much. Being semi-retired, I have had to make sure I still have a balance in life and don't get too upset when business opportunities don't come through. I just remind myself there will be others and to be satisfied and thankful for those I do get to work with.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Connect with others in your field, and don't be afraid to collaborate. Be a team player.
- Treat people with respect - always!
- Don't take things personally when they don't work out.
