What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Crumbs Cake Company, and I create specialty cakes and cupcakes with complex flavors. About 85% of my orders are for Coastal Carolina University students being sent from their parents, mostly out of state! I get tons of support from locals as well.. thank you, Horry County!
Tell us about yourself
My business first began because my husband got a promotion, and I suddenly became a stay-at-home. I worked hard my whole life (being a stay-at-home Mom has its own challenges, Mom's rock!), but I needed something more. What a fun job to be able to create delicious treats, decorate and deliver. I love connecting the parents to their kids when they miss them the most.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I feel accomplished when I write out my schedule for the following week and look through my upcoming orders. I am so grateful that people trust me to make the day special 🧁 I push myself very hard and am proud of what I have accomplished so far. I often run specials for holidays, and I tend to sell out every time; it is reassuring to know that people love my products!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Juggling work life/family life. I have two young children who won't be little forever. Sometimes I just need to remember to turn off my oven and go play. The cake will be there to decorate later!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Word of mouth is still the best advertisement out there!
- Be patient with yourself and others.
- Remember that self-care is important. Small business owners could work 24/7 if we let ourselves.
