Demystifying Early Childhood Years for Parents - Jill Urbane

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jill Urbane, founder of The Mentor Mom, located in Grand Rapids, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Mentor Mom, LLC provides parent coaching and digital resources to families with young children. These services include one-on-one coaching, group coaching, and online courses on topics such as toddler language.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked with families for nearly 30 years as a Master level Social Worker and Early Childhood Interventionist. For nearly 25 of those years, I have been working with parents of infants and toddlers in their homes. Nothing brings me greater joy than helping parents better understand their young children and providing them with the tools needed to create a strong foundation for success!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Stepping way out of my comfort zone and creating a YouTube channel where I share tips and strategies for parents with young children. After only one year, I have over 1,000 subscribers and am now monetized!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Imposter syndrome. There were many days when I first started out that I wondered if I could do this. Seeing others who have been on their journey for a while and the resulting success had me feeling imposter syndrome frequently, e.g., Why would anyone want to work with me? There are others out there that are better than me, etc. Working on a mindset is essential in overcoming imposter syndrome.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Identify what fires you up. Success will always find you if your business is driven by purpose and passion.
  2. Mindset is key. Do something daily to strengthen your mindset. I read a motivational or business-related book every morning, followed by ten minutes of journaling. Starting my day with inspiration and determination leads to a much more productive day.
  3. Review progress on goals WEEKLY. Big goals require many small steps. Breaking your goal down and reviewing your progress on the small steps is key to gaining and keeping momentum.
