Timeless Jewelry for Every Day & Every Mood - Jewelry Splash
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Oksana Shevchenko, owner of Jewelry Splash, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We fell in love with minimalistic designs a long time ago. We believe any woman values simple jewelry and elegant accessories. Surprisingly we found that simple and elegant jewelry is hard to find. What is more, simple jewelry is hard to find at a reasonable price. Our modest goal is to bring a great selection of classy minimalistic jewelry on the market that any woman would need every day. Simple jewelry allows our customers to go from delicate to bold and daring and give a woman freedom to look trendy every day.
In a simple example, by freedom, I mean to wear one ring on a finger for a simple look, two rings for daring, and three rings combining gold and silver for a stunning bold look. What's remarkable - any of the three rings from our collection can be easily combined. Diamonds do not work for everyday life. We concentrated on jewelry that makes you stand out every day and stands the test of time.
Tell us about yourself
At one point in my life, I wanted to create my collection of everyday jewelry that I would be able to wear for work and in the evening, for gym some time maybe. I wanted to have some kind of jewelry capsule that would work with anything I wear. I could find some gold or silver pieces here and there, but surprisingly I could not find a one-stop place for simple and elegant jewelry that matched all kinds of cloth and styles.
Most of the places would offer some simple jewelry pieces, but they would be so overpriced, and the rest of the jewelry in the store would be over-stylized for me, heavy or too shiny. I did not want that. So I decided to create my brand, how Jewelry Splash had been created. I am happy that our jewelry inspires our customers. I know it because people get back to us and tell us about their feelings.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'll tell you a little story that I think says it best. One of our clients purchased Cascata Braided Ring in Stainless Steel and wore it together with a Tiffany ring. She told us that her friends gave her many compliments about her look and asked her about the ring - about our Cascata Ring, not the other one. That moment was incredibly inspiring to me, and this is what keeps us going every day.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
We opened our business right before the COVID situation began, and demand for jewelry dropped sharply. Starting a business is very hard in general. Saving the company during COVID -19, when people wore masks and stayed home most of the time, was incredibly tough.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do not start a business today.
- Tell your parents to knock some common sense and do anything to stop you from starting a business today. The situation is too uncertain. No one knows if we will hit another wave of lockdowns. No one knows what's going to happen with the supply chain. Just don't do it.
- If our precious Tip #1 and #2 do not work for you and you still firmly believe you want to be your own boss and be responsible for your own independence, then work your tail off to find out an idea you would love to bring to this world. Then visualize every aspect of this idea so well in your mind that there will almost be no difference between your dream and reality. Then read and learn steps you need to take to make it all real...And you need an IT guy you can trust.
